                        CHAPTER 167-H.F.No. 941 
           An act relating to crimes; prohibiting killing or 
          injuring a police dog involved in law enforcement 
          investigation or apprehension; prescribing penalties; 
          proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, 
          chapter 609. 
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
    Section 1.  [609.596] [KILLING OR HARMING A POLICE DOG.] 
    Subdivision 1.  [FELONY.] Whoever intentionally and without 
justification causes the death of a police dog when the dog is 
involved in law enforcement investigation or apprehension, or 
the dog is in the custody of or under the control of a peace 
officer, as defined in section 626.84, subdivision 1, paragraph 
(c), is guilty of a felony and may be sentenced to imprisonment 
for not more than two years or to payment of a fine of not more 
than $4,000. 
    Subd. 2.  [GROSS MISDEMEANOR.] Whoever intentionally and 
without justification causes substantial or great bodily harm to 
a police dog when the dog is involved in law enforcement 
investigation or apprehension, or the dog is in the custody of 
or under the control of a peace officer, is guilty of a gross 
misdemeanor. 
    Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
    Section 1 is effective August 1, 1987, and applies to 
crimes committed on or after that date.
