  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; allowing school districts to 
  1.3             dispose of surplus school computers; amending 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 123B.52, by adding a 
  1.5             subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 123B.52, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 6.  [DISPOSING OF SURPLUS SCHOOL 
  1.10  COMPUTERS.] Notwithstanding section 471.345 governing school 
  1.11  district contracts made upon sealed bid or otherwise complying 
  1.12  with the requirements for competitive bidding, other provisions 
  1.13  of this section governing school district contracts or other law 
  1.14  to the contrary, a school district under this subdivision may 
  1.15  dispose of a surplus school computer and related equipment if 
  1.16  the district disposes of the surplus property by conveying the 
  1.17  property and title to: 
  1.18     (1) another school district; 
  1.19     (2) the state department of corrections; 
  1.20     (3) the board of trustees of the Minnesota state colleges 
  1.21  and universities; or 
  1.22     (4) the family of a student residing in the district whose 
  1.23  total family income meets the federal definition of poverty. 
  1.24     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.25     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
