1.1A Senate resolution
1.2commending Deundra Rashawn Roberson, Jamario Deundra Roberson, and Deundra
1.3Roberson, Jr. on receiving the Citizens Award of Commendation.
1.4WHEREAS, on March 3, 2018, the three young men observed heavy smoke billowing from
1.5a residence up the street and all three ran to the burning home to see if anyone needed assistance.
1.6The house was fully engulfed in flames; and
1.7WHEREAS, they ran to the back of the house where they found a ladder and an ax. Jamario
1.8climbed the ladder and smashed a window with the ax; and
1.9WHEREAS, down on the ground, Deundra Jr. took off his jacket and gave it to the
1.10pajama-clad owner of the house to put around her baby. He then ran home and got a blanket to
1.11wrap them both; and
1.12WHEREAS, Deundra Rashawn smashed out other windows. Deundra Rashawn and Jamario
1.13were on the ladder preparing to enter the house when a car caught on fire. A few minutes later, the
1.14car blew up and the fire grew larger; and
1.15WHEREAS, the fire moved quickly toward the back of the house. The house was close to
1.16collapsing when the Fire Department and Police arrived and took over the scene. Jamario assisted
1.17the Fire Department with their fire hoses by dragging them to fire hydrants, one of which was over
1.18500 feet away; and
1.19WHEREAS, the woman inside the house was rescued and transported to the hospital where
1.20she was in intensive care and is still recovering; and
1.21WHEREAS, they received the Citizens Award of Commendation from Fire Chief Gary
1.22Gorman, Police Sergeant Matt Markham, and Mayor Donna Schmitt at the Columbia Heights City
1.23Council for their assistance; and
2.1NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.2thanks the three young men for their bravery, quick thinking, and selfless effort in rescuing the
2.3woman and helping her daughter and baby.
2.4BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.5enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.6Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Deundra Rashawn
2.7Roberson, Jamario Deundra Roberson, and Deundra Roberson, Jr.
