1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing the importance of Black History Month.
1.3WHEREAS, in 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard Scholar, established the observance
1.4of African American history, to reveal the contributions, achievements, and involvement of African
1.5American people in the development of our American democracy; and
1.6WHEREAS, the history of some of us is the history of all of us, and our history is what shapes
1.7us as a state and a nation; and
1.8WHEREAS, we must acknowledge and pay tribute to the generations of individuals who
1.9struggled with adversity, risked their lives for justice, fought a fight that at times seemed impossible
1.10to win, and continue to fight for equality and the American Dream; and
1.11WHEREAS, the month of February gives us a chance to honor the many heroes who are
1.12unknown and unnamed, who have contributed to the struggle for freedom and justice for all; and
1.13WHEREAS, Black History Month encourages all Minnesotans to come together, reflect on
1.14our collective past, and reveal its impact on present conditions; and
1.15WHEREAS, as a state, we can continue to work together to guarantee equal opportunity for
1.16all individuals; NOW, THEREFORE,
1.17BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it applauds the contributions
1.18of African Americans to the history and culture of Minnesota and recognizes the importance of
1.19Black History Month in Minnesota.
1.20BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare a copy
1.21of this resolution, to be authenticated by his signature and that of the Chair of the Senate Rules and
1.22Administration Committee, and transmit it to the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage.
