1.1A Senate resolution
1.2acknowledging February 27, 2018, to be Sophia Day in Minnesota.
1.3WHEREAS, the White Bear Area Chamber of Commerce features an innovative venture
1.4with an extensive cross section of area community leaders and are participating in a unique major
1.5address by Sophia, a humanoid robot, at Century College on Tuesday, February 27, 2018; and
1.6WHEREAS, Sophia will create positive community exposure for technology partnerships
1.7and initiatives as she was recently featured on the Tonight Show and Good Morning United Kingdom,
1.8spoke at the United Nations, and has been awarded citizenship in the country of Saudi Arabia; and
1.9WHEREAS, up to 50 students at Century College will have an experimental learning
1.10opportunity to be involved in prepping the robot prior to her appearance while gaining insight into
1.11artificial intelligence programming; and
1.12WHEREAS, this activity represents a unique, timely, and exciting opportunity for Century
1.13College students to be involved in the dynamics of a segment in the robotics industry capitalizing
1.14on STEM-focused education; and
1.15WHEREAS, this activity also helps to promote the White Bear communities and Century
1.16College as a real center for innovation and to promote Hanson Robotics, the company that created
1.17Sophia; and
1.18NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.19acknowledges February 27, 2018, to be Sophia Day in Minnesota.
1.20BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.21enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.22Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the White Bear Area
1.23Chamber of Commerce.
