1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing Friday, June 25, 2021, as Dr. Thelma Battle Buckner Day in
1.3Minnesota.
1.4WHEREAS, Dr. Thelma Battle Buckner was the ninth of 13 children born to Nathan and
1.5Bessie Battle in Racetrack, Mississippi, graduated from high school in 1949, married in December
1.61950, and then moved to Minnesota in 1952; and
1.7WHEREAS, Dr. Battle Buckner was a mother, pastor, author, community activist, singer,
1.8musician, preacher, and unpaid social worker and the mother of eight children, including three sets
1.9of twins; and
1.10WHEREAS, Dr. Battle Buckner's life's work in ministry, as depicted in her book The Battle
1.11of a Daytime Nightmare, which tells the painful story of the harsh treatment of African American
1.12sharecroppers in the South, should be revered as one of a pioneer likened to Harriet Tubman; and
1.13WHEREAS, Dr. Battle Buckner was also a television and radio personality and evangelist,
1.14having sung and preached to nations around the globe while she was a daycare provider and children's
1.15camp director, and her life story was performed at the Ordway Theater in 1996; and
1.16WHEREAS, the Senate recognizes and respects the lives of service of women such as Dr.
1.17Thelma Battle Buckner who have transformed many lives in the African American community and
1.18around the world; and
1.19WHEREAS, Dr. Battle Buckner's life set many notable historical and contemporary examples
1.20as a powerful force and voice of social change nationally, locally, civilly, politically, professionally,
1.21and academically, shaping a future that secures the fundamental rights of self-determination and
1.22racial justice; and
1.23NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.24recognizes Friday, June 25, 2021, as Dr. Thelma Battle Buckner Day in Minnesota in celebration
1.25of her life, legacy, and incomparable achievements.
1.26BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.27enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.28Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the family of Dr. Thelma
1.29Battle Buckner.
