1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing Abigail Holst for being named a 2016 Wabasha County Dairy Princess.
1.3WHEREAS, our state's dairy industry is a crucial component of Minnesota agriculture;
1.4dairy is one of the principal drivers of the rural economy, providing income and nutrition to
1.5our fellow Minnesotans; and
1.6WHEREAS, county Dairy Princesses either live on a farm, work on a farm, or have parents
1.7who work on a farm, and they must have graduated from high school, be under 24 years of age,
1.8and single; candidates for Dairy Princess are interviewed by the judges and deliver speeches that
1.9demonstrate knowledge about dairy and their ability to promote the dairy industry; and
1.10WHEREAS, Dairy Princesses are community educators and ambassadors for the dairy
1.11industry; at the county level, the women visit schools to educate students about what dairy
1.12farming is like, including what calves and cows eat, how to milk cows, and what life is like in
1.13the county; and
1.14WHEREAS, at the Wabasha County American Dairy Association's 62nd annual Dairy
1.15Princess Coronation and Banquet on April 2, 2016, at the Port 104 in Lake City, Wabasha County
1.16Dairy Princesses were crowned, and Abigail Holst was named one of two Dairy Princesses
1.17in Wabasha County for 2016; and
1.18WHEREAS, in the coming months, those named Dairy Princess in Wabasha County will
1.19be involved in a variety of activities to help promote the dairy industry; Abigail is sponsored by
1.20Young Milk Transport; and
2.1WHEREAS, Abigail's parents are Jary and Celene Holst, and they live on the family's
2.2dairy farm in rural Kellogg; the family's herd consists mostly of Holsteins, along with a few
2.3crossbreeds; and
2.4WHEREAS, Abigail's main job on the family farm is the milking, however she enjoys
2.5merging hay in the summer, along with training cattle for the county fair; living on the farm
2.6has taught her hard work and commitment, skills which she hopes to use when she attends the
2.7University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where she will be majoring in dairy science; and
2.8WHEREAS, along with the other 2016 Wabasha County Dairy Princesses, Abigail will
2.9compete in the Princess Kay of the Milky Way Finalist contest held prior to the Minnesota State
2.10Fair in August; and
2.11NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota
2.12that it congratulates Abigail Holst on being named a 2016 Wabasha County Dairy Princess,
2.13and extends best wishes to her for the future.
2.14BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.15enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.16Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Abigail Holst.
