1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing Juliann Keller of Bellechester, Minnesota, for being named a
1.32016 Goodhue County Dairy Princess.
1.4WHEREAS, Minnesota has a rich tradition in agriculture, which continues to comprise a
1.5large portion of our state's economy and culture; and
1.6WHEREAS, our state's dairy industry is a crucial component of Minnesota agriculture;
1.7dairy is one of the principal drivers of the rural economy, providing income and nutrition to
1.8our fellow Minnesotans; and
1.9WHEREAS, county Dairy Princesses either live on a farm, work on a farm, or have parents
1.10who work on a farm, and they must have graduated from high school, be under 24 years of age,
1.11and single; candidates for Dairy Princess are interviewed by the judges and deliver speeches that
1.12demonstrate knowledge about dairy and their ability to promote the dairy industry; and
1.13WHEREAS, Dairy Princesses are community educators and ambassadors for the dairy
1.14industry; at the county level, the women visit schools to educate students about what dairy
1.15farming is like, including what calves and cows eat, how to milk cows, and what life is like in
1.16the county; and
1.17WHEREAS, at the Dairy Herd Improvement Association's annual banquet on April 2,
1.182016, at the VFW in Zumbrota, Goodhue County Dairy Princesses were crowned; and
1.19WHEREAS, in the coming months, those named Dairy Princess in Goodhue County will
1.20be involved in a variety of activities, including riding a float in parades, serving ice cream at visits
1.21to banks and local businesses, and helping out at Breakfast on the Farm; and
1.22WHEREAS, at the county fair, Dairy Princesses work at the malt booth and pass out
1.23ribbons at the dairy show, with most activities happening in June, which is Dairy Month; and
1.24WHEREAS, Juliann Keller has held offices in FFA and 4H and did Dairy Judging and
1.25Quiz Bowl; she is one of three young Goodhue County women sharing the title of Goodhue
1.26County Dairy Princess for 2016, and she will attend the University of Wisconsin-Stout in the fall
1.27to study family consumer science education; and
1.28WHEREAS, Juliann's parents are Ted and Lora Keller and her sponsor is First Farmers
1.29and Merchants Bank; along with the other 2016 Goodhue County Dairy Princesses, Juliann will
1.30compete in the Princess Kay of the Milky Way Finalist competition this May; and
1.31NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.32congratulates Juliann Keller of Bellechester, Minnesota, on being named a 2016 Goodhue County
1.33Dairy Princess, and extends best wishes to her for the future.
1.34BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.35enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.36Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Juliann Keller.
