1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing the 40th anniversary of Glen's Food Center in Luverne, Minnesota.
1.3WHEREAS, those whose Minnesota businesses stand the test of time perform a valuable
1.4service to our communities, deserving of special legislative recognition; and
1.5WHEREAS, Glen Gust began his grocery career at age 7, when he started delivering bread,
1.6and by age 12, he was delivering milk and earning $4 per week in the summers; and
1.7WHEREAS, as a high school student in Canby, Glen worked for the local grocery store,
1.8and he worked at Sullivan's SuperValu in St. Cloud after graduation; he attended St. Cloud State
1.9University and studied business administration, working at a Sullivan's SuperValu in Minneapolis
1.10during the first two summers of his college years; and
1.11WHEREAS, Glen was drafted to serve in Vietnam in 1969, and in April 1971, he returned
1.12home and began working at Sullivan's in Burnsville; after three years with Sullivan's, Glen
1.13inquired about buying into the business, and when that wasn't an option, he set out to find a
1.14grocery store of his own; it turned out that Carl's Jack and Jill grocery store in Luverne was for
1.15sale, and on March 27, 1976, he and a partner purchased the property; and
1.16WHEREAS, within a year, Glen bought out his partner, Jim Twait, and was on his way; in
1.171992, Glen added 4,000 square feet to his store; in 1998, he added another 2,500 square feet; and
1.18in 2003, he moved Glen's Food Center to a new location in the middle of town; and
1.19WHEREAS, in 1999, Glen was named Minnesota Grocer of the Year, and in 2012, he was
1.20installed as chairman of the board of the Minnesota Grocers Association; Glen managed to
1.21succeed in a very competitive business environment by cultivating loyalty, offering good deals,
1.22and providing excellent, friendly service and a clean, neat shopping environment to keep the same
1.23customers coming back again and again; and
2.1WHEREAS, Glen has generously given back to the community, donating between $35,000
2.2and $90,000 per year to numerous causes and organizations; and
2.3WHEREAS, Glen has been a good boss who wasn't hard to work for, as long as his
2.4employees put the customers first; despite it not being an "easy" business, Glen has made it fun
2.5for himself and those around him, never forgetting to enjoy what he does; and
2.6NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.7congratulates Glen Gust on the 40th anniversary of Glen's Food Center in Luverne, Minnesota,
2.8and extends best wishes to him and the store's customers and employees for the future.
2.9BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.10enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.11Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Glen Gust.
