1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Park High School for their high performing AVID program.
1.3WHEREAS, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a global, nonprofit
1.4organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap. It teaches students skills and behaviors for
1.5academic success and helps develop critical thinking, literacy, and math skills; and
1.6WHEREAS, Park High School was named an AVID National Demonstration School, the
1.7first AVID National Demonstration High School in Minnesota; and
1.8WHEREAS, the school has grown its AVID program from 20 students in 2009 to 260
1.9students in 2018; and
1.10WHEREAS, Maria Tol and Nikki McCarty, Park's AVID Coordinators, have built an AVID
1.11elective system that is supportive and positive, and they have a team of approximately 20 teachers;
1.12and
1.13WHEREAS, AVID students are enrolling in as many as, or more, rigorous courses than their
1.14peers. With the support of their teachers and work in AVID they are finding success in those courses;
1.15and
1.16WHEREAS, AVID National Demonstration Schools embrace best practice in both instruction
1.17and culture and are known throughout the nation for providing rigorous and appropriate instruction
1.18at all levels, to all students; and
1.19WHEREAS, there are over 7,000 schools implementing AVID throughout the world, and
1.20on any given school day two million students learn by using AVID's research-based best practices;
1.21and
1.22WHEREAS, Park High School joined only 175 other schools recognized by AVID as
1.23providing excellent instruction to all students; and
1.24NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.25congratulates Park High School for their high performing AVID program.
1.26BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.27enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.28Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Park High School.
