1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing the Minnesota Student Association's adoption of a resolution on reducing
1.3opioid harm.
1.4WHEREAS, the surge in opioid-related deaths and the negative consequences that opioid
1.5addiction has inflicted on the state's citizens are deserving of special legislative attention; and
1.6WHEREAS, recognizing the urgent need to call attention to this issue, the Minnesota Student
1.7Association of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, adopted a resolution on April 24, 2018,
1.8on strategies to reduce opioid harm; and
1.9WHEREAS, the association's resolution supported the university's policy of training officers
1.10to carry and use Narcan to treat opioid overdoses; and
1.11WHEREAS, the resolution supported adding a drug-disposal box for prescription drugs to
1.12Boynton Health Service, the university's medical clinic; and
1.13WHEREAS, the association is dedicated to exploring ways to increase campus awareness
1.14of opioid use and addiction resources through email, posters, and social media and to develop
1.15methods to reduce the stigma on drug use by using peer-to-peer education networks; and
1.16NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.17commends the Minnesota Student Association on recognizing the urgent need to address opioid
1.18harm and adopting a resolution to address strategies to reduce opioid harm on the university's
1.19campus.
1.20BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.21enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.22Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the Minnesota Student
1.23Association of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
