1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Emily Nichols of Mayo High School on qualifying for the
1.3National History Day competition.
1.4WHEREAS, National History Day is a cocurricular academic enrichment program for
1.5middle and high school students that culminates in a series of regional, state, and national events
1.6and helps students learn about historical issues and build academic skills; and
1.7WHEREAS, National History Day in Minnesota, a partnership of the Minnesota Historical
1.8Society and the University of Minnesota, gives students the opportunity to share their research
1.9with historians, educators, and their peers as they compete for prizes and the opportunity to
1.10represent Minnesota at the national contest; and
1.11WHEREAS, more than 25,000 Minnesota students participated in the program this year
1.12and selected their topics based on the national theme "Leadership and Legacy in History"; and
1.13WHEREAS, after they selected a topic, students conducted research in school, public,
1.14and academic libraries, and found primary and secondary sources to support their historical
1.15arguments; and
1.16WHEREAS, Emily Nichols of Mayo High School has distinguished herself by advancing
1.17to the national competition in Washington, D.C., with her project titled "Soaring to Success:
1.18Innovations from Mayo Clinic Aero Medical Unit"; and
1.19WHEREAS, Emily also won a topical award from the Minnesota Historical Society for
1.20her project; and
1.21NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that
1.22it congratulates Emily Nichols of Mayo High School on qualifying for the National History
1.23Day competition.
1.24BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.25enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.26Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Emily Nichols.
