1.2honoring Prudential Spirit of Community Award Distinguished Finalist
1.3Heather Weller.
1.4WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are part of the nation's largest
1.5youth recognition program, based exclusively on volunteer service, and more than 30,000
1.6students across the nation participated in this year's program; and
1.7WHEREAS, Heather Weller, a junior at New York Mills High School in New York Mills,
1.8Minnesota, was named a Distinguished Finalist for the 2016 Prudential Spirit of Community
1.9Awards; and
1.10WHEREAS, Heather Weller founded "Thank a Veteran," a project that has collected and
1.11distributed more than 45,000 messages of thanks to soldiers sent through e-mail, social media,
1.12and community events; and
1.13WHEREAS, Heather Weller, who was originally inspired by a visit to her uncle in a
1.14veteran's home, also maintains the "Thank a Veteran" Facebook page, collects and distributes
1.15care packages for active duty soldiers, and records interviews with veterans for the Veterans'
1.16History Project for the Library of Congress; and
1.17NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.18recognizes and commends Heather Weller for her outstanding record of volunteer service, and
1.19congratulates her on being named a Distinguished Finalist in the Prudential Spirit of Community
1.20Awards.
1.21BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.22enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.23Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Heather Weller.
