1.1A Senate resolution

1.2congratulating Willard "Ike" Ikola on his extraordinary hockey career and 

1.3impact on the community.

1.4WHEREAS, Willard "Ike" Ikola is a legendary hockey player and coach deserving of special 

1.5recognition and congratulations for his years as a player and coach in Edina, Minnesota;
         and

 1.6WHEREAS, Ike grew up on the Iron Range, played goaltender at Eveleth High School and 

1.7helped the team win three consecutive state championships, went on to attend the University
         of 

1.8Michigan, where he won two NCAA hockey championships as the Michigan team's goalie,
         and 

1.9while serving in the U.S. Air Force after college, played for the 1956 Olympic team
         when the 

1.10U.S.A. won the silver medal and Ike was named outstanding goalie of the games; and

1.11WHEREAS, Ike was an outstanding player but an even better coach and was honored by 

1.12his community and the Ikola Foundation with a tall bronze statue in his likeness outside
         of Braemer 

1.13Arena in Edina; and

 1.14WHEREAS, Ike is described by his players as an excellent coach, teacher, and motivator, 

1.15and was a positive supportive role model; and

 1.16WHEREAS, Ike is known for his sportsmanship and winning streaks with a career record 

1.17of 616-149-36 over 33 seasons including eight state championships, 19 section championships,
         and 

1.1822 Lake Conference titles, and was named Minnesota high school hockey coach of the
         year six 

1.19times; and

 1.20NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it 

1.21recognizes Willard "Ike" Ikola as a legendary hockey player and incredible high school
         coach and 

1.22congratulates him for the statue erected in his honor; and

1.23BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an 

1.24enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature
         and that of the 

1.25Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Willard
