1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing the staff of Evergreen Park World Cultures Community School for its
1.3extraordinary support to students and family members during a time of tragedy.
1.4WHEREAS, in November 2014, a number of families in the Evergreen Park community were left homeless
1.5as a result of a fire in their apartment building; and
1.6WHEREAS, Evergreen Park was the first level of support for many families affected by the fire, and staff
1.7helped families meet food, clothing, and housing needs in the immediate aftermath of this incident; and
1.8WHEREAS, in the spring of 2015, a student at Evergreen Park, Barway Collins, was killed; and
1.9WHEREAS, staff provided significant support to students and families during this time, including working
1.10with social workers, psychologists, and translators to help students understand and cope with tragedy and grief; and
1.11WHEREAS, the school welcomed Barway's mother and community members when they toured the school,
1.12met with Barway's teachers, and collected his belongings; and
1.13WHEREAS, school principal Sheryl Ray spoke at Barway's funeral; and
1.14NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it commends the
1.15staff of Evergreen Park World Cultures Community School for their unwavering commitment to students and families
1.16and extraordinary service to the community during this time of tragedy.
1.17BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an enrolled copy of this
1.18resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration
1.19Committee, and transmit it to Sheryl Ray, principal of Evergreen Park World Cultures Community School.
