1.1A Senate resolution
1.2commemorating Uprising Remembrance Month.
1.3WHEREAS, August, 2019, marks the 75th anniversary of two armed grassroots uprisings
1.4in central Europe against fascism in Slovakia and Poland; and
1.5WHEREAS, the Polish people, beginning on August 1, 1944, in Warsaw and in other cities,
1.6began an insurrection against the genocidal regime of Nazi Germany and bravely fought for 63
1.7days in the largest resistance movement of World War II; and
1.8WHEREAS, the Slovak people, beginning on August 29, 1944, began a nationwide
1.9insurrection against the genocidal regime of Nazi surrogate Josef Tiso and bravely fought for 61
1.10days; and
1.11WHEREAS, United States and Allied forces provided aerial and logistical aid at the time
1.12when the Red Army stopped its military advance and while agents of its Communist Party sought
1.13to undermine and compromise resistance efforts in both Poland and Slovakia; and
1.14WHEREAS, many immigrants from both countries have, since before Minnesota's inception
1.15as a state and in the years since 1945, contributed to the economic growth, cultural vitality, and
1.16diversity of Minnesota, a history that deserves to be honored and cherished; and
1.17WHEREAS, the Slovak community hosts an international conference the weekend of August
1.1824 and 25 at C.S.P.S. Hall in St. Paul to discuss the Slovak National Uprising; and
1.19WHEREAS, the Minnesota Polish community makes ongoing efforts to commemorate the
1.20work of the United States Army Air Corps to aid Poland with aerial supply drops during the Warsaw
1.21Uprising; and
1.22WHEREAS, the sacrifices that freedom-loving people everywhere must still make today to
1.23bring an end to genocidal and totalitarian regimes in South America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle
1.24East are causes worthy of acknowledgment; and
1.25NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.26proclaims August, 2019, to be Uprising Remembrance Month and salutes the efforts of the Slovak
1.27and Polish communities to commemorate our shared sacrifices for freedom and the strong, positive
1.28relationships between our respective people.
1.29BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.30enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.31Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to a representative of the
1.32Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International and the American Council for Polish Culture.
