1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Bill Salisbury, dean of the capitol press corps, on the occasion of his retirement.
1.3WHEREAS, Bill Salisbury began his life in journalism by reporting for his father's weekly newspaper, the
1.4Belgrade Tribune, when he was in high school; and
1.5WHEREAS, Bill went on to write for both The Minnesota Daily and Ivory Tower literary magazine as an
1.6undergraduate at the University of Minnesota, where he earned his degree in history; and
1.7WHEREAS, after college, Bill worked at the daily Fairmont Sentinel before joining the Rochester
1.8Post-Bulletin as state capitol correspondent in 1975; and
1.9WHEREAS, he left Rochester for the Pioneer Press in 1977, moving into their state capitol bureau the
1.10following year; and
1.11WHEREAS, with the exception of a five-year stint as their Washington correspondent, Bill Salisbury
1.12has trained his energy and acumen on St. Paul in the service of the Pioneer Press' capitol coverage from 1978
1.13until today; and
1.14WHEREAS, during his tenure Bill has covered six governors, 33 legislative regular sessions, 19 statewide
1.15elections, and visits to our state by six presidents; and
1.16WHEREAS, after over 50 years in journalism, 40 of them covering politics and state government, 36 of them
1.17with the Pioneer Press, Bill Salisbury, dean of the capitol press corps, has decided to retire on January 5, 2015; and
1.18NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it recognizes Bill
1.19Salisbury for his lifelong commitment to covering state government and politics in a fair, thorough, thoughtful
1.20manner, and that it honors him on the occasion of his retirement.
1.21BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an enrolled copy
1.22of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair of the Senate Rules and
1.23Administration Committee, and transmit it to Bill Salisbury.
