1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating Fire Chief Steve Lukin on 43 years of service with the
1.3Maplewood Fire Department.
1.4WHEREAS, Fire Chief Steve Lukin is retiring after serving 43 years with the Maplewood
1.5Fire Department, the past 20 years of which he served as chief; and
1.6WHEREAS, Lukin's firefighting career began in 1977 when he served as a volunteer with
1.7the Gladstone Fire Department, one of three independent departments that served Maplewood until
1.8they were consolidated into the Maplewood Fire Department in 1997; and
1.9WHEREAS, Lukin became chief of the Gladstone Fire Department in 1994 and went on to
1.10become assistant chief of the Maplewood Fire Department after the independent departments were
1.11consolidated. He was promoted to chief in 2000; and
1.12WHEREAS, as chief, Steve oversaw the department's transition to take over the provision
1.13of emergency medical services to Maplewood from the police department in 2005; and
1.14WHEREAS, one of Steve's proudest accomplishments came in 2016 with the opening of
1.15the East Metro Public Safety Training Center in Maplewood. Steve and other east metro fire chiefs
1.16spent many years persistently lobbying for funding for the facility, which features a pair of fire
1.17simulator buildings for use in training first responders; and
1.18WHEREAS, Steve is looking forward to spending his retirement with his wife, Kathleen,
1.19and enjoying more time outdoors and with his grandchildren; and
1.20NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.21congratulates Steve Lukin on his many years of outstanding service to the Maplewood Fire
1.22Department and commends his passion for firefighting and his service to his community.
1.23BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.24enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.25Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Steve Lukin.
