1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Specialist Matthew J. Johnson of Maplewood, who was killed
1.3in the line of duty in Afghanistan.
1.4WHEREAS, men and women who serve in the United States armed forces are to be
1.5commended for their heroic service in defense of our country and in the spread of freedom and
1.6democracy throughout the world; and
1.7WHEREAS, those who risk their lives and give selflessly of their time and energy to
1.8defend our nation's precious freedoms in the armed forces perform an important service deserving
1.9of special legislative recognition; and
1.10WHEREAS, Matthew J. Johnson graduated from North St. Paul High School and joined
1.11the Army in 2008; and
1.12WHEREAS, Matthew excelled in military service as in other pursuits, and won many
1.13awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal,
1.14Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism
1.15Service Medal, Army Services Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Action
1.16Badge, and Driver Badge with Driver Wheeled Vehicles; and
1.17WHEREAS, he served in Afghanistan with the 618th Engineer Company, 27th Engineer
1.18Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade of the 18th Airborne Corps; and
1.19WHEREAS, in July of 2010, Matthew and three other soldiers were killed in Zabul
1.20Province when insurgents attacked their military vehicle with an improvised explosive device;
1.21NOW, THEREFORE,
1.22BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it mourns the death of
1.23Specialist Matthew J. Johnson and commends his generous service to this country. It extends
1.24sincere condolences to his family and to all who knew him.
1.25BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.26enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by his signature and that of the Chair of the
1.27Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the family of Matthew J. Johnson.
