1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing Mast Cell Disease Awareness Day in Minnesota.
1.3WHEREAS, mast cell diseases include mastocytosis, where the body produces too many mast
1.4cells, and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), where even the normal number of mast cells are too
1.5easily activated by a trigger to release their contents, called mediators; and
1.6WHEREAS, these mediators can cause a variety of unpredictable symptoms in both children and
1.7adults, including skin rashes, flushing, abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, headache, bone pain,
1.8skeletal lesions, and anaphylaxis; and aggressive disease can occur, which may require chemotherapy; and
1.9WHEREAS, the Mastocytosis Society, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting
1.10patients affected by mastocytosis or mast cell activation disorders, as well as their families, caregivers, and
1.11physicians through research, education, and advocacy; and
1.12WHEREAS, the Mayo Clinic Program for the Study of Mast Cell and Eosinophil Disorders is
1.13a leader in mast cell and eosinophil-associated disease research and as part of their research, they have
1.14discovered several new syndromes and identified how mast cells and eosinophils play a role in a variety
1.15of diseases; and
1.16WHEREAS, the Mastocytosis Society will be hosting their 20th annual meeting in Rochester at
1.17the home of the Mayo Clinic on September 17-20, 2014, and will be holding their first-ever 5K fun
1.18run along with their 8th annual walkathon; and
1.19NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.20commends the Mastocytosis Society and the Mayo Clinic Program for the Study of Mast Cell and
1.21Eosinophil Disorders for their dedication to research and education and recognizes September 20, 2014, as
1.22Mast Cell Disease Awareness Day in Minnesota.
1.23BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare enrolled
1.24copies of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair of the Senate
1.25Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit them to the Mastocytosis Society and the Mayo Clinic
1.26Program for the Study of Mast Cell and Eosinophil Disorders.
