A bill for an act
relating to higher education; requesting the Board of Regents establish a special
commission to review intercollegiate athletics.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORTS.

new text begin It is requested that the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota establish a
special commission in conjunction with the Minnesota Athletics Alliance to conduct a
comprehensive review and evaluation of the role of intercollegiate athletics at the University
of Minnesota. The duties of the commission include but are not limited to determining the
value of athletics and the preservation of intercollegiate sports opportunities for university
students, exploring reasonable financing models for nonrevenue sports, and establishing
evidence-based proposals to guide decisions affecting the future of athletics at the University
of Minnesota. If the commission is established, it is requested that the research and findings
of the commission be provided to members of the legislative committees with jurisdiction
over higher education issues.
