A bill for an act
relating to education; allowing patriotic societies the opportunity to encourage
student participation; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter
120B.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

new text begin For purposes of this section, "patriotic society" means any
group or organization intended to serve young people under the age of 21 listed in United
States Code, title 36, subtitle II, part B, or any of the group's or organization's affiliates.

new text begin Upon receiving notice under subdivision 3, a school principal
must provide a representative of a patriotic society the opportunity to speak with students
during the school day for the purpose of providing information about how the patriotic
society supports educational interests and civic involvement. The principal may limit the
opportunity to speak at the school to one school day during the school year and no more
than 30 minutes of instructional time. A representative of a patriotic society who speaks to
students at the school may provide students with written materials about the patriotic society.

new text begin A patriotic society that intends to speak to students at a school
must provide written notice to the school principal at least 60 days prior to the start of the
school year. The school principal must provide written approval to the patriotic society that
includes the date and time the organization will be allowed to address students.
