  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to Hennepin county; including a fifth chief 
  1.3             deputy sheriff in the unclassified service; amending 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 383B.32, subdivision 
  1.5             2. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 383B.32, 
  1.8   subdivision 2, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 2.  [UNCLASSIFIED SERVICE.] The unclassified service 
  1.10  comprises: 
  1.11     (a) Officers chosen by election or appointment to fill an 
  1.12  elective office. 
  1.13     (b) Members of boards and commissions appointed by the 
  1.14  county board. 
  1.15     (c) Physicians, medical residents, interns, and students in 
  1.16  training. 
  1.17     (d) Nonsalaried attending medical staff. 
  1.18     (e) Special deputies serving without pay. 
  1.19     (f) Seasonal, temporary, provisional, intermittent, and 
  1.20  emergency positions. 
  1.21     (g) Positions funded by specific governmental or 
  1.22  nongovernmental grants of intermittent or limited funding 
  1.23  duration. 
  1.24     (h) The head or principal administrative officer of a 
  1.25  bureau or department appointed pursuant to sections 383B.101 to 
  2.1   383B.103; or appointed by the county board; or appointed for a 
  2.2   term pursuant to statute.  Notwithstanding any contrary 
  2.3   provision of other law, any person coming within this provision, 
  2.4   who, on August 11, 1980, is in the classified service, shall 
  2.5   remain in the classified service until vacating the position.  
  2.6   Thereafter, any appointment hereunder shall be in the 
  2.7   unclassified service. 
  2.8      (i) Chief deputy or principal assistant and secretary for 
  2.9   each elected official. 
  2.10     (j) Examiner of titles and deputy examiners. 
  2.11     (k) Chief criminal deputy sheriff, a chief civil deputy 
  2.12  sheriff, a chief administrative deputy sheriff, a chief 
  2.13  detention deputy sheriff, and a chief financial services deputy 
  2.14  sheriff. 
  2.15     (l) Public defender. 
  2.16     (m) Administrative assistant to the district court 
  2.17  administrator. 
  2.18     (n) Temporary judicial appointments performing a special 
  2.19  function. 
  2.20     (o) County medical examiner. 
  2.21     (p) Office staff appointed by the county administrator 
  2.22  pursuant to sections 383B.101 to 383B.103. 
  2.23     (q) County administrator. 
  2.24     Sec. 2.  [NO LOCAL APPROVAL REQUIRED.] 
  2.25     Under Minnesota Statutes, section 645.023, subdivision 1, 
  2.26  paragraph (c), local approval is not required for section 1 
  2.27  since Hennepin county has a population of more than 1,000,000. 
  2.28     Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.29     Section 1 is effective the day after its final enactment.
