A bill for an act
relating to energy; appropriating money for a third-party feasibility study on using
Minnesota taconite in long-term battery storage systems.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

$2,000,000 in fiscal year 2024 is appropriated from the general fund to the commissioner
of commerce for a third-party feasibility study to identify and process Minnesota iron
resources that could be suitable for upgrading to long-term battery storage specifications.
The commissioner must consult with representatives of the battery energy storage system
industry when selecting a contractor to conduct the feasibility study. A report summarizing
the results of the feasibility study must be submitted to the commissioner of commerce and
to the chairs and ranking minority members of the house of representatives and senate
committees with jurisdiction over energy policy no later than February 1, 2025. This is a
onetime appropriation.
