A bill for an act
relating to veterans; providing for a current listing of deceased Minnesota military
personnel; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 197.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

new text begin The commissioner of veterans affairs shall compile and maintain an ongoing list
of Minnesota residents who, as members of the United States armed forces, have died of
service-connected causes while serving in the United States armed forces since September
11, 2001. The list must be comprehensive and inclusive, and may be made available
at the discretion of the commissioner for ceremonial and honorary purposes, broadly
conceived, but is not indicative of any person's status with regard to qualification for
veterans benefits or other benefits.

new text begin For each deceased service member listed, the commissioner shall note the following
information about the person at approximate time of death: the person's full name,
military rank, branch of service and assigned military unit, military occupational specialty
(MOS), age, and Minnesota hometown, as well as the general cause of death, including
"combat," "training accident," "disease," and any other information the commissioner
considers necessary.

family members of Minnesota residents, but who themselves were not Minnesota residents
at the time of death, provided the service member's home state at time of death is noted.
