  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; enhancing the penalties 
  1.3             for pimps and patrons of juvenile prostitutes; 
  1.4             amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 609.322, 
  1.5             subdivision 1. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 609.322, 
  1.8   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subdivision 1.  [INDIVIDUALS UNDER AGE 16 18.] Whoever, 
  1.10  while acting other than as a prostitute or patron, intentionally 
  1.11  does any of the following may be sentenced to imprisonment for 
  1.12  not more than 20 years or to payment of a fine of not more than 
  1.13  $40,000, or both: 
  1.14     (1) solicits or induces an individual under the age of 16 
  1.15  18 years to practice prostitution; 
  1.16     (2) promotes the prostitution of an individual under the 
  1.17  age of 16 18 years; or 
  1.18     (3) receives profit, knowing or having reason to know that 
  1.19  it is derived from the prostitution, or the promotion of the 
  1.20  prostitution, of an individual under the age of 16 18 years. 
  1.21     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.22     Section 1 is effective August 1, 2000, and applies to 
  1.23  crimes committed on or after that date.
