  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; establishing a grant 
  1.3             program to enable local law enforcement agencies to 
  1.4             purchase automatic external defibrillators; 
  1.5             appropriating money. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [GRANT PROGRAM.] 
  1.8      (a) The commissioner of public safety shall administer a 
  1.9   grant program to provide grants to local law enforcement 
  1.10  agencies to purchase automatic external defibrillators.  Grants 
  1.11  awarded under this section may only be made to law enforcement 
  1.12  agencies that are first responders for medical emergencies.  Law 
  1.13  enforcement agencies that receive grants under this section must 
  1.14  provide any necessary training to their employees concerning the 
  1.15  use of the defibrillator. 
  1.16     (b) By January 15, 1999, the commissioner shall report to 
  1.17  the chairs of the senate and house divisions having jurisdiction 
  1.18  over criminal justice funding on grants awarded under paragraph 
  1.19  (a). 
  1.20     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.21     $....... is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.22  commissioner of public safety for the fiscal year ending June 
  1.23  30, 1999, to provide the grants described in section 1.
