  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; prohibiting a school district 
  1.3             from subsidizing student parking fees; amending 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 120.73, by adding a 
  1.5             subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 120.73, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 2c.  [PARKING FEES.] A school board is not allowed to 
  1.10  subsidize student parking.  If a school district provides 
  1.11  parking for students, parking fees must be set at a rate 
  1.12  sufficient to raise the money needed to maintain and operate the 
  1.13  student parking lot.  Maintenance and operation costs include, 
  1.14  but are not limited to, paving and landscaping activities, snow 
  1.15  plowing, and security and administrative expenses associated 
  1.16  with monitoring and supervising the student parking areas. 
  1.17     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.18     Section 1 is effective July 1, 1998.
