  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to charitable organizations; permitting the 
  1.3             attorney general to grant certain extensions for 
  1.4             filing of annual reports; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.5             1998, section 309.53, subdivision 1. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 309.53, 
  1.8   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subdivision 1.  Every charitable organization that is 
  1.10  required to file or that files a registration statement pursuant 
  1.11  to section 309.52 shall file an annual report with the attorney 
  1.12  general upon forms provided by the attorney general or on forms 
  1.13  identical thereto on or before June 30 of each year if its books 
  1.14  are kept on a calendar year basis, or within six months after 
  1.15  the close of its fiscal year if its books are kept on a fiscal 
  1.16  year basis.  For cause shown the attorney general may extend the 
  1.17  time for filing the annual report for a:  (1) an initial period 
  1.18  not to exceed three months; and (2) upon separate request, for 
  1.19  an additional period not to exceed 45 days if the charitable 
  1.20  organization demonstrates that the need for the additional 
  1.21  extension is due to circumstances beyond the control of the 
  1.22  charitable organization.
