  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to agriculture; establishing a livestock 
  1.3             development program; amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, 
  1.4             section 17.101, by adding a subdivision. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 17.101, is 
  1.7   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.8      Subd. 6.  [LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT.] (a) For the purposes of 
  1.9   this subdivision, "local unit of government" means a county or a 
  1.10  group of counties acting jointly. 
  1.11     (b) The commissioner shall establish a process, including 
  1.12  criteria and standards, to recognize and assist efforts by local 
  1.13  units of government to maintain or expand their livestock sector.
  1.14     (c) A local unit of government that meets the criteria may 
  1.15  apply to the commissioner to be designated a "livestock 
  1.16  friendly" county.
