  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to counties; authorizing certain compensation 
  1.3             to coroner, deputy coroner, coroner's investigator, or 
  1.4             medical examiner; amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, 
  1.5             section 382.18. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 382.18, is 
  1.8   amended to read: 
  1.9      382.18 [OFFICIALS NOT TO BE INTERESTED IN CONTRACTS.] 
  1.10     No county official, or deputy or clerk or employee of such 
  1.11  official; and no commissioner for tax-forfeited lands or 
  1.12  commissioner's assistants, shall be directly or indirectly 
  1.13  interested in any contract, work, labor, or business to which 
  1.14  the county is a party or in which it is or may be interested or 
  1.15  in the furnishing of any article to, or the purchase or sale of 
  1.16  any property, real or personal, by, the county, or of which the 
  1.17  consideration, price, or expense is payable from the county 
  1.18  treasury.  Nothing in this section shall prevent a person from 
  1.19  receiving reimbursement from a county for providing licensed or 
  1.20  tribally approved family foster care.  This section does not 
  1.21  prevent a coroner, deputy coroner, coroner's investigator, or 
  1.22  medical examiner from receiving compensation for professional 
  1.23  services from a professional corporation or medical provider 
  1.24  under contract to provide coroner services to a county.  Any 
  1.25  violation of the provisions of this section shall be a gross 
  2.1   misdemeanor.
