  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to public safety; authorizing the electronic 
  1.3             processing of certain motor vehicle registration 
  1.4             renewals; authorizing an additional fee for accepting 
  1.5             payment by credit card; proposing coding for new law 
  1.6             in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 168. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [168.341] [ELECTRONIC VEHICLE REGISTRATION 
  1.9   RENEWALS; CREDIT CARD FEE.] 
  1.10     (a) Notwithstanding other law, under its authority in 
  1.11  sections 373.32 and 373.33, a county may electronically process 
  1.12  motor vehicle registration renewals by itself, or through its 
  1.13  agent or contractor, and may impose an additional fee for 
  1.14  accepting payment by credit card for the vehicle registration 
  1.15  tax under section 168.013 and the filing fee under section 
  1.16  168.33.  The additional fee must be deposited in a separate 
  1.17  account in the county treasury for disposition by the county. 
  1.18     (b) A deputy registrar appointed directly by the 
  1.19  commissioner of public safety acting as the registrar of motor 
  1.20  vehicles may electronically process motor vehicle registration 
  1.21  renewals and may impose an additional fee for accepting payment 
  1.22  by credit card for the vehicle registration tax under section 
  1.23  168.013 and the filing fee under section 168.33.  The additional 
  1.24  fee must not exceed the amount charged to the accepting deputy 
  1.25  registrar by the credit card issuer.
