  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to employment; requiring the adoption of an 
  1.3             occupational safety and health standard regulating 
  1.4             ergonomic hazards. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [ERGONOMICS; OSHA STANDARD.] 
  1.7      (a) The commissioner of labor and industry shall, by 
  1.8   January 30, 2005, adopt a final occupational safety and health 
  1.9   standard regulating workplace ergonomic hazards under Minnesota 
  1.10  Statutes, section 182.655, subdivision 4, to prevent 
  1.11  work-related musculoskeletal disorders.  The standard shall, at 
  1.12  a minimum, address exposure to the following ergonomic risk 
  1.13  factors: 
  1.14     (1) awkward postures; 
  1.15     (2) force; 
  1.16     (3) repetitive motion; 
  1.17     (4) repeated impacts; 
  1.18     (5) heavy, frequent, or awkward lifting; and 
  1.19     (6) vibration. 
  1.20     (b) The standard shall emphasize the prevention of injuries 
  1.21  before they occur and cover all industries where workers are 
  1.22  exposed to workplace ergonomic hazards and where there are 
  1.23  economically and technologically feasible measures to control 
  1.24  these hazards. 
  1.25     (c) The standard shall be based upon employer and industry 
  2.1   practices that have effectively reduced exposures to ergonomic 
  2.2   hazards and the occurrence of work-related musculoskeletal 
  2.3   disorders. 
  2.4      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.5      Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
