A bill for an act
relating to public safety; eliminating fee for identification cards for seniors;
amending Minnesota Statutes 2007 Supplement, section 171.07, subdivision 3a.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2007 Supplement, section 171.07, subdivision 3a,
is amended to read:


Subd. 3a.

Identification cards for seniors.

A Minnesota identification card issued
to an applicant 65 years of age or over shall be of a distinguishing color and plainly

the nearest quarter dollar
deleted text end . A Minnesota identification card or a Minnesota driver's license
issued to a person 65 years of age or over shall be valid identification for the purpose of
qualifying for reduced rates, free licenses or services provided by any board, commission,
agency or institution that is wholly or partially funded by state appropriations.

Sec. 2. new text begin APPROPRIATION.

new text begin $174,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the commissioner of public safety
for fiscal year 2009 to cover the cost of providing senior identification cards at no cost.
The commissioner shall transfer a driver's license agent fee equal to $5 per identification
card issued to the counties and cities issuing the cards.
