  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; increasing the funding for 
  1.3             American Indian language and culture programs, 
  1.4             post-secondary preparation grants, and scholarships; 
  1.5             appropriating money; amending Laws 1997, First Special 
  1.6             Session chapter 4, article 2, section 51, subdivisions 
  1.7             2, 4, and 5. 
  1.8   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.9      Section 1.  Laws 1997, First Special Session chapter 4, 
  1.10  article 2, section 51, subdivision 2, is amended to read: 
  1.11     Subd. 2.  [AMERICAN INDIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAMS.] 
  1.12  For grants to American Indian language and culture education 
  1.13  programs according to Minnesota Statutes, section 126.54, 
  1.14  subdivision 1: 
  1.15       $591,000 $841,000    .....     1998
  1.16       $591,000 $841,000    .....     1999
  1.17     The 1998 appropriation includes $59,000 for 1997 and 
  1.18  $532,000 $782,000 for 1998.  
  1.19     The 1999 appropriation includes $59,000 for 1998 and 
  1.20  $532,000 $782,000 for 1999.  
  1.21     Any balance in the first year does not cancel but is 
  1.22  available in the second year. 
  1.23     Sec. 2.  Laws 1997, First Special Session chapter 4, 
  1.24  article 2, section 51, subdivision 4, is amended to read: 
  1.25     Subd. 4.  [AMERICAN INDIAN POST-SECONDARY PREPARATION 
  1.26  GRANTS.] For American Indian post-secondary preparation grants 
  2.1   according to Minnesota Statutes, section 124.481: 
  2.2        $857,000 $1,107,000    .....     1998
  2.3        $857,000 $1,107,000    .....     1999
  2.4      Any balance in the first year does not cancel but is 
  2.5   available in the second year. 
  2.6      Sec. 3.  Laws 1997, First Special Session chapter 4, 
  2.7   article 2, section 51, subdivision 5, is amended to read: 
  2.8      Subd. 5.  [AMERICAN INDIAN SCHOLARSHIPS.] For American 
  2.9   Indian scholarships according to Minnesota Statutes, section 
  2.10  124.48: 
  2.11       $1,600,000 $1,850,000    .....     1998 
  2.12       $1,600,000 $1,850,000    .....     1999 
  2.13     Any balance in the first year does not cancel but is 
  2.14  available in the second year. 
  2.15     Sec. 4.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.16     Sections 1 to 3 are effective the day following final 
  2.17  enactment.
