  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to state government; reducing the size of the 
  1.3             legislature; amending Minnesota Statutes 1994, 
  1.4             sections 2.021; and 2.031, subdivision 1.  
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 2.021, is 
  1.7   amended to read: 
  1.8      2.021 [NUMBER OF MEMBERS.] 
  1.9      For each legislature, until a new apportionment shall have 
  1.10  been made, the senate is composed of 67 50 members and the house 
  1.11  of representatives is composed of 134 100 members. 
  1.12     Sec. 2.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 2.031, 
  1.13  subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.14     Subdivision 1.  [LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS.] The 
  1.15  representatives in the senate and house of representatives are 
  1.16  apportioned throughout the state in 67 50 senate districts and 
  1.17  134 100 house districts.  Each senate district is entitled to 
  1.18  elect one senator and each house district is entitled to elect 
  1.19  one representative. 
  1.20     Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.21     Sections 1 and 2 are effective for elections held to elect 
  1.22  senators and representatives to serve after January 1, 2003.  
  1.23  Section 2 is effective for districts apportioned after the 2000 
  1.24  census and subsequent censuses.
