  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to highways; prohibiting commissioner of 
  1.3             transportation from taking certain actions at trunk 
  1.4             highway or interstate highway rest areas. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [COMMISSIONER OF TRANSPORTATION; HIGHWAY REST 
  1.7   AREAS.] 
  1.8      Until July 1, 2005, the commissioner of transportation may 
  1.9   not: 
  1.10     (1) close any trunk highway or interstate highway safety 
  1.11  rest area that was open on January 1, 2004, or substantially 
  1.12  reduce the hours of operation of such a rest area below the 
  1.13  hours of operation in effect on January 1, 2004; or 
  1.14     (2) enter into any agreement or lease with any private 
  1.15  entity that would allow any commercial activity at a trunk 
  1.16  highway or interstate highway safety rest area other than 
  1.17  contracts for the placement or service of vending machines. 
  1.18     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective the day 
  1.19  following final enactment.
