1.1A resolution
1.2memorializing the President of the United States, the United States Secretary of the
1.3Treasury, and the United States Treasury Automotive Task Force to reconsider the
1.4treatment of Minnesota auto dealerships.
1.5WHEREAS, new motor vehicle dealerships in Minnesota serve thousands of consumers in
1.6400 communities across the State of Minnesota; and
1.7WHEREAS, new motor vehicle dealerships in Minnesota provide approximately 18,000
1.8jobs in Minnesota; and
1.9WHEREAS, new motor vehicle dealerships in Minnesota comprise a multibillion dollar
1.10industry which contributes significantly to state and local tax revenue; and
1.11WHEREAS, new motor vehicle dealerships are independently-owned businesses that own
1.12their own property and buy inventory, parts, signage, and facilities in order to provide a virtually
1.13cost-free distribution network to auto manufacturers; and
1.14WHEREAS, approximately half of the new motor vehicle dealerships in Minnesota sell
1.15General Motors and Chrysler products; and
1.16WHEREAS, President Obama has appointed the Automotive Task Force to oversee the
1.17reorganization of General Motors and Chrysler with the reorganization to include a significant
1.18reduction in auto dealerships; NOW, THEREFORE,
1.19BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota that it urges the President
1.20of the United States, the United States Secretary of the Treasury, and every member of the United
1.21States Automotive Task Force to consider that fewer Minnesota auto dealerships will not improve
1.22the economic conditions of General Motors and Chrysler.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota that it urges the
2.2President of the United States, the United States Secretary of the Treasury, and every member of
2.3the United States Treasury Automotive Task Force to consider that auto dealerships are important
2.4to Minnesota's economy and communities, and requests that the United States Department of
2.5Treasury Automotive Task Force eliminate its requirement that General Motors and Chrysler
2.6terminate Minnesota dealerships.
2.7BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the State of Minnesota is
2.8directed to prepare copies of this memorial and transmit them to President Barack Obama, the
2.9United States Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner, and every member of the United States
2.10Treasury Automotive Task Force.
