  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; amending the process by which 
  1.3             state board of teaching members are confirmed; 
  1.4             amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 122A.07, 
  1.5             subdivision 1. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 122A.07, 
  1.8   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subdivision 1.  [APPOINTMENT OF MEMBERS.] The board of 
  1.10  teaching consists of 11 members appointed by the governor, with 
  1.11  the advice and consent of the senate.  Membership terms, 
  1.12  compensation of members, removal of members, the filling of 
  1.13  membership vacancies, and fiscal year and reporting requirements 
  1.14  are as provided in sections 214.07 to 214.09.  No member may be 
  1.15  reappointed for more than one additional term. 
  1.16     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.17     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment, 
  1.18  and applies retroactively to appointments to the board made 
  1.19  before that date, so that senate confirmation is not required 
  1.20  for any pending appointment.
