A bill for an act
relating to the military; designating June 29 as General John Vessey Day; requiring
the placement of a General John Vessey statue in the State Capitol; appropriating
money; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 10.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

[10.596] GENERAL JOHN VESSEY DAY.

The day of June 29 is designated as General John Vessey Day. General John Vessey
was a four star general in the United States Army and served as the tenth Chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff. As a dedicated servant to the United States of America, General John
Vessey dedicated his life to military service, volunteering for the Minnesota Army National
Guard in 1939 and then going on to serve our country in World War II and the Vietnam
War, and also by holding military posts in Germany, Korea, and as a special emissary to
Vietnam.

Sec. 2. GENERAL JOHN VESSEY STATUE.

The commissioner of administration shall place a statue of General John Vessey in the
State Capitol Building. The Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board shall solicit
design submissions from the public for the statue. The Capitol Area Architectural and
Planning Board shall select a design from those submitted. The selected design of the statue
must be approved by the adjutant general of the Department of Military Affairs.

Sec. 3. APPROPRIATION.

$....... in fiscal year 2018 is appropriated from the general fund to the commissioner of
administration for the purposes of section 2. This appropriation is available until expended.
