  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; requiring that permits 
  1.3             to carry pistols be issued to retired peace officers 
  1.4             in certain situations; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.5             1998, section 624.714, by adding a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 624.714, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 5a.  [PERMITS FOR RETIRED PEACE OFFICERS.] 
  1.10  Notwithstanding subdivision 5, a permit to carry a pistol shall 
  1.11  be granted to a retired peace officer formerly licensed by the 
  1.12  board of peace officer standards and training under section 
  1.13  626.845 if the applicant: 
  1.14     (1) is not a person prohibited by section 624.713 from 
  1.15  possessing a pistol; and 
  1.16     (2) provides a certificate, dated within 30 days of the 
  1.17  date of application, from the chief law enforcement officer of 
  1.18  the department that the applicant retired from, stating that: 
  1.19     (i) the applicant was not fired or discharged from the 
  1.20  applicant's position; and 
  1.21     (ii) the applicant's disciplinary record does not indicate 
  1.22  a reason why the applicant should not be granted a permit. 
  1.23     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.24     Section 1 is effective August 1, 1999.
