A bill for an act
relating to natural resources; requiring a report about the state's peatlands;
appropriating money.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. new text begin PEATLAND REPORT; APPROPRIATION.

new text begin (a) $....... in fiscal year 2022 is appropriated from the general fund to the commissioner
of natural resources to prepare a report, in cooperation with the Board of Water and Soil
Resources, that:

new text begin (1) assesses the current state of Minnesota's peatlands;
new text end

new text begin (2) identifies current threats and efforts to protect and restore the state's peatlands;
new text end

new text begin (3) assesses the level of peat mining in the state;
new text end

new text begin (4) provides an estimate of the carbon storage provided by the state's peatlands; and
new text end

new text begin (5) includes recommendations for steps the state could take to further protect and restore
peatlands.

new text begin (b) The report must be submitted to the chairs and ranking minority members of the
house of representatives and senate committees and divisions with jurisdiction over the
environment and natural resources by January 15, 2022.
