A bill for an act
relating to economic development; appropriating money for a grant to the
Minnesota High Tech Association's SciTechsperience program; providing for
science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) internships.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

new text begin $507,000 in fiscal year 2014 and $507,000 in fiscal year 2015 are appropriated from
the general fund to the commissioner of employment and economic development for a
grant to the Minnesota High Tech Association. The Minnesota High Tech Association shall
use the grant to support SciTechsperience, a program that supports science, technology,
engineering, and math (STEM) internship opportunities for college students in their field
of study. The internship opportunities must match college students with paid internships
within STEM disciplines at small, for-profit companies in Minnesota with fewer than 100
employees. At least 100 students must be matched in the first year and at least 150 students
must be matched in the second year. Hiring companies shall receive a dollar-for-dollar
matching stipend for the intern's wages, with a matching stipend cap of $2,500 per intern.
