  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to human services; requiring medical 
  1.3             assistance to cover pharmaceutical care; amending 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 256B.0625, by adding 
  1.5             a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 256B.0625, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 13c.  [PHARMACEUTICAL CARE.] Medical assistance 
  1.10  covers pharmaceutical care.  For purposes of this subdivision, 
  1.11  "pharmaceutical care" means the responsible provision of drug 
  1.12  therapy for the purpose of improving a patient's quality of life 
  1.13  by:  (1) curing a disease; (2) eliminating or reducing a 
  1.14  patient's symptoms; (3) arresting or slowing a disease process; 
  1.15  or (4) preventing a disease or a symptom.  Pharmaceutical care 
  1.16  involves the documented process through which a pharmacist 
  1.17  cooperates with a patient and other professionals in designing, 
  1.18  implementing, and monitoring a therapeutic plan that is expected 
  1.19  to produce specific therapeutic outcomes, through the 
  1.20  identification, resolution, and prevention of drug-related 
  1.21  problems.
