A bill for an act
relating to local government; appropriating money to reimburse counties for
litigation costs in defending the constitutionality of the 2015 county audit law.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. new text begin REIMBURSEMENT OF COUNTIES' LEGAL COSTS.

new text begin $150,000 in fiscal year 2018 is appropriated from the general fund to the commissioner
of employment and economic development for grants to the counties of Becker and Wright
to reimburse each county for litigation costs incurred in defending the constitutionality of
Minnesota Statutes, section 6.481, enacted in Laws 2015, chapter 77, article 2, section 3,
in the suit brought against each county by the State Auditor. Notwithstanding Minnesota
Statutes, section 16A.28, this appropriation is available until June 30, 2021. If the
appropriation is not sufficient to pay all costs incurred by both counties, the grants must be
proportionate to each county's costs.
