  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to recreation; appropriating money for state 
  1.3             trails. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.6      (a) $125,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.7   commissioner of natural resources for the border-to-border trail 
  1.8   study of the trails and waterways division.  The 
  1.9   border-to-border trail study shall inventory and integrate 
  1.10  local, regional, and state trail systems and plan for future 
  1.11  development, including indentifying abandoned rail lines and 
  1.12  dual treadways.  The Minnesota recreational trail users 
  1.13  association (MURTA) shall serve as the advisory group to the 
  1.14  department of natural resources in developing the study and plan.
  1.15  The appropriation is available until June 30, 1999. 
  1.16     (b) $500,000 is appropriated in fiscal year 1998 and 
  1.17  $500,000 is appropriated in fiscal year 1999 from the general 
  1.18  fund to the commissioner of natural resources for the operations 
  1.19  and maintenance of the state trail system as defined in 
  1.20  Minnesota Statutes, chapter 86A.
