  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; authorizing a capital grant to 
  1.3             independent school district No. 473, Isle; 
  1.4             appropriating money. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.7      $1,500,000 is appropriated from the general fund in fiscal 
  1.8   year 1998 to the commissioner of children, families, and 
  1.9   learning to make a capital grant to independent school district 
  1.10  No. 473, Isle.  The grant shall be used to convert a school 
  1.11  building into a community center.  Programs located at the 
  1.12  converted facility shall include the alternative education 
  1.13  program, early childhood family education programs, centralized 
  1.14  school district kitchen facilities, and other community 
  1.15  programs.  The grant may be used to: 
  1.16     (1) demolish, repair, remodel, furnish, and equip the 
  1.17  vacated school building; 
  1.18     (2) upgrade and centralize school district kitchen 
  1.19  facilities; 
  1.20     (3) remedy fire marshal orders; 
  1.21     (4) upgrade the auditorium; 
  1.22     (5) improve the site; and 
  1.23     (6) upgrade technology for the elementary program. 
  1.24     The school district must continue to operate and maintain 
  1.25  the renovated facility and, to the extent possible, shall make 
  2.1   any remaining space in the facility available to other public or 
  2.2   community agencies.
