  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; directing the commissioner of 
  1.3             education to conduct a needs assessment for a 
  1.4             statewide program that serves talented junior and 
  1.5             senior high school students; appropriating money. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [TALENTED STUDENT PROGRAM NEEDS ASSESSMENT.] 
  1.8      The commissioner of education shall conduct a needs 
  1.9   assessment to determine whether the talented youth program in 
  1.10  south central Minnesota, or a similar program, should be 
  1.11  available throughout the state to serve talented junior and 
  1.12  senior high school students.  The commissioner shall report the 
  1.13  findings to the education committees of the legislature by 
  1.14  February 1, 1996. 
  1.15     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.16     $60,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.17  department of education for the south central Minnesota talented 
  1.18  youth program.  $30,000 is available for the fiscal year ending 
  1.19  June 30, 1996, and $30,000 is available for the fiscal year 
  1.20  ending June 30, 1997. 
  1.21     Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.22     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
