A bill for an act
relating to traffic regulations; establishing pilot
project to study and determine effect of
speed-detection devices on drivers in school zones.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. new text begin SCHOOL ZONE SPEED-MONITORING PROJECT.

new text begin The commissioner of public safety, in cooperation with the
commissioner of education and each applicable school district,
shall place a speed-detection radar device, which shows a driver
how fast the vehicle is moving, in each of four school zones
during the 2005-2006 academic school year. Two of the school
zones must be located in the metropolitan area and two school
zones outside of the metropolitan area. The commissioner shall
monitor and gather data on the effect of the presence of these
devices on vehicle speeds and on traffic and pedestrian safety
in these school zones and submit a report to the legislature
with findings and recommendations by January 2, 2007.
