  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to traffic regulations; changing the 
  1.3             designation of the agency responsible for notifying 
  1.4             victims of vehicle thefts; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.5             1996, section 169.042, subdivision 1. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 169.042, 
  1.8   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subdivision 1.  [NOTIFICATION.] A The law enforcement 
  1.10  agency which originally received the report of a vehicle theft 
  1.11  shall make a reasonable and good-faith effort to notify the 
  1.12  victim of a the reported vehicle theft within 48 hours after the 
  1.13  agency recovers the vehicle recovering the vehicle or receiving 
  1.14  notification that the vehicle has been recovered.  The notice 
  1.15  must specify when the recovering law enforcement agency expects 
  1.16  to release the vehicle to the owner and how where the owner may 
  1.17  pick up the vehicle.  The law enforcement agency that recovers 
  1.18  the vehicle must promptly inform the agency that received the 
  1.19  theft report that the vehicle is recovered, where the vehicle is 
  1.20  located, and when the vehicle can be released to the owner.
